Spotify Introduces Direct Messaging: Share Music, Podcasts & More Instantly

Date: 28 August 2025

Spotify Brings Messaging to the App

Spotify has officially rolled out a Direct Messaging (DM) feature called “Messages”, giving users a whole new way to connect inside the app. Instead of switching between apps like WhatsApp or Instagram, listeners can now share tracks, podcasts, and audiobooks directly within Spotify.

This update is available for both free and Premium users aged 16 and above, and it’s currently rolling out in select regions. At the moment, the feature is only accessible on mobile devices.

How Spotify Messages Work

Unlike group chats, Spotify’s new messaging system is designed for private, one-on-one conversations.

Here’s how it works:

  1. While listening, tap the share icon on any track, podcast, or audiobook.
  2. Choose a contact and send the content instantly.
  3. If the person hasn’t interacted with you before, your message will land in a request folder (similar to Instagram DMs).
  4. Once the request is accepted, both users can continue chatting, share more music, react with emojis, and explore additional content together.

This feature is found by tapping the profile photo in the top-left corner of the app. Spotify also suggests possible contacts based on shared playlists, Jams, Blends, or Family/Duo plan memberships.

Privacy & Security

Spotify assures users that all conversations are encrypted during transmission and storage, ensuring privacy. However, the platform also uses automated scanning tools to detect harmful or illegal content, which may be reviewed by moderators if flagged.

Can You Turn It Off?

Yes — if you’re not interested in chatting inside Spotify, you can disable the Messages feature in Settings. You’ll still be able to share Spotify content externally via WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, and other platforms.

Why This Matters

With this move, Spotify is transforming from just a streaming platform into a social music hub. The new messaging option makes it easier than ever for friends to:

  • Recommend songs instantly
  • Discuss favorite podcasts
  • Share audiobook moments
  • Stay connected without switching apps

It’s clear Spotify wants to make your music journey more social, interactive, and fun.

Final Thoughts

The addition of Direct Messaging in Spotify is a game-changer. By letting users share and discuss music without leaving the app, Spotify is positioning itself as more than just a streaming service — it’s becoming a community-driven music experience.

So, if you’re eligible, update your app and give the new Messages feature a try today! 🎶
